ABC 7: Census canvassing begins in Chicago, focusing on immigrant communities
Reporter Sarah Schulte of ABC 7 covered our Census canvass training, speaking with leaders Anel Sancen of Mujeres Latinas en Accion and Youngwoon Han of HANA Center.
"We really need to get this right in general, but in Illinois we have the sixth-highest population of people considered hard to count," said Maria Fitzsimmons, census director for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
Immigrant communities are among the hardest to count.
"There is still a lot of fear, a lot of mistrust in the community, so that is going to be our biggest challenge, getting people to open up to us and actually listening," said Anel Sancen, Mujeres Latinas en Accion.
"There are different barriers with language, not understanding what it does and how we benefit from participating, so yes, there is a lot of work to do," said Youngwoon Han, a community organizer with HANA Center.
